· 你们选择了适合自己的大学和专业(顺便说一句,你们的选择很棒);

· 你们中的许多人在人生中第一次离开父母独立生活;

· 你们在课堂上表现优异而且在作业和考试中严守了学术诚信;

· 最近,你们完成了复杂的毕业设计和论文在这个过程中克服实验、编程或数学方面的诸多难题;

Dear parents and colleagues, but especially, dear 2024 graduates!

It is my great honor to speak to you on this special, joyful day. Having joined ShanghaiTech almost 10 years ago, I must sadly confess that in all this time, my Chinese has hardly improved, so please forgive me for giving this address in English. Wǒ de zhōngwén hái bùgòu hǎo. This is fueled by the fact that most students speak excellent English and the welcoming environment the University provides for English speaking faculty – thank you very much! On the other hand, it is also a matter of talent.

Talent is something strange, in some areas you have it – for example I like to think I have it for coding, robotics and research – and in other areas you lack it. But the beauty of talent lies not just in having it, but in recognizing where it can be nurtured and where you must rely on the talents of others. As you step into the world, embrace your strengths and also your limitations. Seek collaboration where you are weak, and offer your strengths where others falter. This mutual exchange is the cornerstone of innovation and progress.

Last year, ShanghaiTech celebrated its 10th anniversary—meaning you are the first cohort to graduate from an institution that has truly come into its own! Having joined ShanKeDa in 2014 I’ve had the privilege to grow as a professor alongside with our university. You all also witnessed and contributed to our school's evolution into a hub of learning and research, equipped with enviable resources, outstanding classes, and remarkable students— an environment that doesn’t need to shy away from comparison with the best universities in China and the world!

For example, just this year, in my school, the School of Information Science and Technology, our students have achieved the remarkable feat of winning best paper awards at three top conferences, unimaginable even at the world’s most prestigious universities. Thank you for your trust in ShanghaiTech and congratulations on our collective achievements!

But as much as we've grown, the world outside has changed even more. We now live in a time of phenomenal developments in AI and robotics and we are just beginning to see the massive capabilities and potential benefits these technologies will bring in the future. Yet, it is expected that they will massively disrupt almost all industries. What does this disruption mean?

Imagine a world where AI and robotics not only perform the majority of tasks currently done by humans but also revolutionize medical treatment and provide astounding personal services. These changes will impact everybody, on a personal level but also the society as a whole. And ShanghaiTech is at the forefront of this development! With the AI for Art, Science, Business and Humanities program we enable those schools to use AI as tools to accelerate and supercharge their research. And in my school, the School of Information Science and Technology, we do active research on the theory and application of AI and robotic technology.

You, our graduates, have been instrumental in this journey—conducting research, implementing solutions, and pushing the boundaries of what these tools can do. As you step out as future leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators, remember that your unique skills equip you to lead in these fields. However, with great power comes great responsibility—always consider the ethical implications of your work and cherish the value of teamwork.

As you forge new paths and shatter old boundaries, keep in mind that true success is measured not only by your achievements but by the positive impact you make on your community and the world at large.

So, the future is uncertain, the world is open – ready for you to shape it and find your place of happiness and your achievements in it. Of course, this will be a challenge – but you can do it! You have shown your success – you are graduating today! You have mastered many challenges already:

· You have excelled in the gaokao;

· You had the daunting task of choosing the right university for you (great choice by the way!) and your field of study;

· Many of you were living on your own for the first time;

· You were performing well in class, while maintaining academic integrity in your homework and exams;

· Recently, you tackled complex graduation projects and maybe had to overcome problems in experimentation, coding or math.

· And you prevailed in the challenges that the COVID pandemic imposed upon us;

All of you overcame these challenges! And there will be many more for you in the future. Sometimes you get your butt kicked by real life – but you know you can do it! Be strong, push through and you can solve any problem! You have proven that you are talented by graduating today – so look into the future with your head held high and go out there and find your happiness!  We at ShanghaiTech University wish you great success along the way and congratulate you again for your great achievement today! Thank you! And happy graduation - go make us proud!
